The betel (areca) nut is [ plit ] into quarters and a piece is laid on a buyo ( piper betel L.) leaf, which is thinly spread with lime. A little tobacco is sometimes added and the whole is chewed. It has apungent astringent taste, colors the saliva red, and finally discolors the teeth.
