When the Spaniards first reached the Philippines they found the Moros in possession of firearms, and the greatest treasures of the datos or sultans were these lantakes or cannon. They made many themselves butdoubtless secured some from Borneo. They were also found making power and shot. These cannon are loaded to the muzzle with stones, bits of iron and other projectiles, and the fire is held until the enemy is very near, so that no shots are wasted. The gun carriages vary fromthose with wheels to logs or forked sticks. | |
