When the Spaniards first reached the Phillipines they found the Moros in possession of firearms, and the greatest treasures of the datos or sultans were there lantakas or cannln [sic]. They made many themselves but doubtlesssecured some from Borneo. They were also found making powder and shot. These cannon are loaded to the muzzle with stones, bits of iron and other projectiles and the fire is held until the enemy is very near, so that no shots are wasted. The gun carriages vary from those withwheels to logs or forked sticks. | |
