Cole [Photograph cover lower right bottom of catalog card] | Notes: | Width: | Length: | [LEFT MARGIN] A | 128566 | 1-2 | (287) | ENT | NEG.ALB.P.461 | Acc. 1115 | [Cursive capital L.] |[BACK] Bamboo fire making apparatus, used as follows; A thoroughly dried joint of bamboo is split lengthwise, and a groove is cut across the center of one of the halves. A piece of the other half is cut to a sharp edge. One operator holds the grooved piece firmly on theground and the cutting piece is rubbed rapidly across the edges of the groove by the other operator. Heated wood dust drops down through the groove and accumulates in a conical pile, at the top of which a spark of fire soon appears. The sawdust is wrapped in tinder, andblown upon vigorously until a flame appears. When operated by one person the grooved section has one end resting on the ground, and the other on the abdomen of theoperator, who holds tinder under the groove with his free hand while rubbing the knife across the groove withthe other. |
