Clay is put on a dish which sits in a rice winnower. It is first roughly shaped with he fingers and is then further moulded by turning the dish with one hand whilethe clay is shaped with a wetcloth. It is also beaten and shaped with a ladle, and if decoration is desired figures are cut in with the sharpened bamboo sticks. After drying in the sun the jar is smoothed with a stone and is ready to be fired. Bamboo sticks are built up around it in the manner of layinga rail fence. This when burning makes a fast but even fire which bakes the clay without cracking the pot. | [1 photograph] | |
