Manufacture of Metal Pipes

MANUFACTURE OF METAL PIPES. The first step in the manufacture of brass pipes is the making of a beeswax model, of the exact size and decoration, of the pipe desired. This is imbedded in a clay jacket in which a single funnel like opening is left. The clay mould is then thoroughly baked in the fire until it is hard and the wax has melted and run out. Small pieces of metal are placed in the funnel of the mould, and the whole thing is buried in a charcoal fire. In a few moments the metal has melted and flowed to all parts of the mould, which is then allowed to cool. The clay is broken away and the pipe is ready to be cleaned and polished. Tubular iron pipes are made at Tukukan. They are hammered out and are so carefully welded over a core that it is often difficult to detect the seam. BONTOCIGOROT. Northern Luzon, Philippine Islands.
