Catalog Description Name: "Anito" of hard dark wood, of carved male human figure in sitting position with arms (broken) resting upon knees. Tuft of hair (horse's) fastened to head. Height 56 cm. carved representations of the human body are sometimes seen in the houses, or similar figures made from the roots of tree ferns are placed in the fields or near the trails. The actual significance of the carvings is not known, but the fact that they are called "anito" that is "spirit" and that offerings are placed before some of them, seems to indicate that they represent the inhabitants of the spirit world. A large figure, placed on the trail between Somoki and Tulubin was erected just prior to a head hunt. At that time the warriors spent a night there making offerings, and watching signs favorable to their project.
