Leilani Chan Photo Scan 1

Photo of Chan, June 1969 - backsideTaken during Chan’s first semester at UP Baguio. It was taken in the cafeteria at UP Baguio. Chan acquired it from one of the other students at UP Baguio. The student gave it to her during the annual end of year parties (which is like prom in high school). Chan describedit as a picture of “me seated down in a contemplative mood observing other students and professors, trying to scan the lay of the land.” Chan said, “It is an important event to graduate from high school after 12 years under the tutelage of the French speaking Belgiannuns. Being accepted at UP Baguio was also a feat; had taken test to get in. This means I’ve become independent of my parents, the nuns and in a progressive school.” Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this story do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
