Description:
Common Heritage: Homeland Memories was a series of digitization events held at the museum. Members of the Filipina/o community in Chicago were invited to share their immigration experiences in the form of photos, objects, documents and oral storytelling. Co-curators, volunteers, and museum staff made digital records of these items to preserve them for future study and reflection. Staff and volunteer collaborators on this project included: Florence Almeda, Stefanie Bator, Melissa Burnett, Sarah Carlson, Lani Chan, Jerico Domingo, Froilan Fabro, Julia Kennedy, Marina Labarthe, Carol L. Lamen, Loribelle Lorenzo, Neal Matherne, Etta McKenna, John McKenna, Trinity Medellin, Cassie Pontone, and Alpha Sadcopen. These events were supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

She said leaving broke her whole idea of the world and that she understood the world was bigger. Arguelles had to be tutored in English and got new clothes.For her parents (dad was 40), Arguelles said there were far better economic opportunities. Both parents had siblings who were nurses in Canada. Arguelles’ parent’s siblings helped them in Canada and it was an exciting time.
