Alejandro Acierto Surgeon's Tools

Surgeon's tools owned by Alejandro AciertoAcierto estimated the surgeon’s tools to be from the late 1800s or early 1900s. Acierto acquired them 2-3 years ago from his late grandfather’s storage unit. They were given to Acierto’s grandfather as a gift from a surgeon he was friends with named Dr. AlfredoRaquedan. Acierto said Dr. Raquedan performed tracheotomies, which were not considered safe at the time. Acierto said Dr. Raquedan performed these surgeries to relieve airway problems caused by smoking disorders. Acierto’s family were smokers, which he said was very commonin the Philippines. Acierto found it interesting that Dr. Raquedan was trying to help by performing tracheostomies. Acierto said Dr. Raquedan worked around the United States but was based in California. Acierto’s grandfather was a naval cadet and he met Dr. Raquedan whenthey were in the Navy together. A stamp on the tools says, “Frank S. Betz Co., Chicago”. Acierto said that many surgical tools were made in Chicago around this period.
