Edwin P. Abaya Abel Iloko Robe

Abel Iloko (Hand woven) bath robe owned by Edwin P. Abaya- detail.  Made in the 1960s and given to Edwin by his mother, who had the robe custom made for him. It was made in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. He brought it with him when he came to the US in 1968. It is important to Edwinbecause hand woven clothing and other products are and have been a thriving industry in Ilocos Sur and he does not know if we have any examples of this work in our collection at the Field Museum. He wants to make sure they are represented. He says the design is slightlyunusual for the time, as they were usually more geometric. He does not wear it anymore because he wants to preserve it. He says he is grateful that this project (Homeland Memories) exists for the people who came to the US from the Philippines and wants to contribute these 2objects to show what his hometown is known for.
