Florence Almeda Altar Piece

“Altar Piece” owned by FLorence's father, Francis AlmedaAlmeda wrote, “Made around 1987, acquired by my father when he was 17 in Manila. It is an altarpiece with a prayer written on it. My father, Francis Almeda, said ‘This is a 30 year old memento that I received when I was 17 years old. Faith has been the core of my life, and forms the major fabric of Philippine culture. This short prayer was taught to me in high school by the best professor I have ever had in my life, and has provided me with much comfort and grace through three decades. Through my medical school training and through ourjourney to Chicago to complete our residency and fellowship, this humble prayer reminds me of where I come from, who I am, and where I am going. It now sits at my bedside and is the first words that greet me every morning.’ Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this story do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
